Between 1981 and 1988, worked for J.P.MORGAN in Madrid and New York in the Treasury and Latin American Divisions. Appointed Vice President in 1987.

Joined BANCO SANTANDER in 1988. Directed the Bank's international expansion in the 90's and was responsible for the Latin American, Corporate Banking, Asset Management and Treasury areas. Chief Executive Officer of Banco Santander de Negocios and member of Banco Santander's Board and Executive Committee since 1989 and of its Management Committee since 1994.

Since 2002, Executive Chairman of Banesto, which under her leadership has made a clear commitment towards innovation and SMEs.  Banesto has been recognised as the best bank in Spain in 2008 and 2009 by the prestigious financial magazine Euromoney.

Member of the board of directors of INSEAD and GENERALI and member of the International Advisory Board of the New York Stock Exchange and the Inter-American Development Bank. Since May 2008 Member of the Board of Management of the European Association for Banking History e.V.

Founder and Vice-Chairman of "Empresa y Crecimiento" (Company & Growth) and  Chairman of "Conocimiento y Desarrollo" (Knowledge & Development) Foundations.

From March 2007 to March 2010, Chairman of Club Excelencia en Gestión (Excellence in Management Club).
