Mr. Fanjul was born in Santiago de Chile in 1949.

Mr. Fanjul was the Chairman Founder and CEO of Repsol, from 1985 until 1996. He has also been Chairman of Hidroeléctrica del Cantábrico and is at present Vice Chairman and CEO of Omega Capital. Mr. Fanjul is currently Vice Chairman of the Board of Lafarge and a member of the boards of the London Stock Exchange, The Marsh and McLennan Companies, Areva and Acerinox. He has also been a board member of Unilever and BBVA. He is a Trustee of the International Accounting Standards Committee Foundation.

He is a member of the Trilateral Commission and has also been a member of the Competitiveness Advisory Group to the President of the European Commission.
